Energy Company Eyes Elkhart County

A Nevada-based company has unveiled plans to build a “green” technology manufacturing facility in Elkhart County. The Elkhart Truth reports Energy-Inc. has asked the county council for a 10-year partial tax abatement for property at an industrial park. The company says it hopes to invest $96 million in the new facility and eventually have a work force of 500 employees.  Read the source article

Energy Leader Upbeat About Electric Vehicle Grants

The leader of Indiana’s clean technology initiative says President Barack Obama’s recent announcement that six Indiana companies and a group of universities are set to receive $416 million in federal grants is a “very good start” for the state. Energy Systems Network President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Mitchell says the fact that Indiana received the second largest amount of funding for electric vehicle technology research is “validating” for the state’s effort to prosper in the growing industry. He says the state stands to benefit tremendously from Indiana-based companies working to create hybrid electric trucks.  Read the source Article

Lake Station, Indiana to Purchase Fuel-Efficient Vehicles

Lake Station Mayor Keith Soderquist says the city will use a $330,000 federal grant to purchase up to 16 new fuel-efficient vehicles. Our partners at The Times of Northwest Indiana report the city plans to buy five police cars, five electric cars and four trucks, including E85 models.  Read the source article

Duke Seeks Stimulus Funding for Smart Grid Project

Duke Energy Corp. (NYSE: DUK) is seeking $200 million in federal funding to accelerate a $1 billion update to its electric grid in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. The company has submitted the request to the U.S. Department of Energy, which will award $4.5 billion in smart grid grants as part of the federal stimulus package. Duke has also reached an agreement with California-based Echelon Corp. (Nasdaq: ELON) to be a key systems supplier for the utility’s smart grid program.  Read the Source Article
