Rose-Hulman Strives For Green Chemistry Department

Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry says it wants to become the first completely green undergraduate chemistry program in the world. The effort will be accomplished by eliminating all hazardous waste generated by instructional laboratories by either having benign waste or through recycling. Two leaders in green chemistry have also been added to the department’s external advisory board.  Read the source article

Delaware County Lands Second Wind Energy Company

Just months after Italian manufacturer Brevini Company announced it would relocate its U.S. headquarters and build its first U.S. manufacturing facility in Delaware County, a second international company is making a significant investment in the area. Germany-based VAT-Getriebetechnik (VAT) has revealed plans to also locate its U.S. headquarters and first North American manufacturing facility in Delaware County. With two European wind energy companies soon doing business in east central Indiana, local leaders believe the area’s winning streak is likely to continue.  Read the source article

Dixie Chopper Manufactures World’s First Natural Gas Mower

It’s common knowledge that cars contribute to air pollution, but most people don’t recognize a second culprit parked in their garage: the lawn mower. A Swedish study recently published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society shows running a lawn mower for one hour produces nearly as much air pollution as a 100-mile car trip. Such sobering statistics, market demand and a desire to do “what’s right” led Coatesville-based lawn mower manufacturer Dixie Chopper to introduce the world’s first compressed natural gas lawn mower, the Xcaliber Eco-Eagle, scheduled to be rolling off the production line early next month.
