What is your green ethic? To celebrate Earth Day, a group of community residents named the “Knox County Green Committee” hopes to teach families just how easy and important it is to be green with a variety of activities at the Riverfront Pavilion.
Commercial vendors will be on hand to display earth friendly products and services such as solar, conservation and recycling. Nonprofit groups with earth friendly projects may participate, too. Educational activities for children are needed as well as food vendors.

Inspired by IUPUI’s inaugural Common Theme book, Deep Economy by Bill McKibben, and the 2010 Spirit & Place theme, our distinguished panel of faculty and local experts will explore how and why we consume food – its sources, quality, culture, and markets and the consequences of our consumption on our local and worldwide community. Join thought provoking discussions and be prepared to challenge your current way of thinking while joining fellow alumni and friends who share your passion for learning and engagement.
Participants who arrive at 7:30 will receive a continental breakfast and have a chance to watch the documentary “Homegrown” from Producer/Director Robert McFalls
“Homegrown” follows the Dervaes family who run a small organic farm in the heart of urban Pasadena, California. While “living off the grid”, they harvest over 6,000 pounds of produce on less than a quarter of an acre, make their own bio diesel, power their computers with the help of solar panels, and maintain a website that gets 4,000 hits a day. The film is an intimate human portrait of what it’s like to live like “Little House on the Prairie” in the 21st Century.

This course provides the understanding and tools necessary to perform a DIY energy assessment of your home. We’ll begin by creating an energy profile of your home using existing utility bills. From this information we will calculate seasonal and baseload energy consumption profiles, energy intensity and home heating indexes. Compared with national statistics these indexes will tell you how efficient your home is. We will determine how much energy you are using for water heating, air conditioner, appliances, lighting, cooking and laundry. This information will serve as the foundation for creating an energy plan for your home. We’ll discuss steps you can take in your home to conduct self-diagnostics and improve energy performance. We will also discuss professional home energy audits, what they can provide and when they are necessary.
