CarmelFest Green Initiative

PRESS RELEASE

July 3, 2010

Working with the Carmel Green Initiative Organization, CarmelFest 2010 will expand green efforts for the 2010 Independence Day Festival set for July 4th & 5th at Carmel Civic Square.
In its second year as a green festival, CarmelFest is enhancing its campaign to protect and preserve the environment.  Plans for this year’s event include increasing the number of recycling bins, encouraging vendors to use fewer disposables, reducing/eliminating paper flyers, utilizing reusable signs & posters, and encouraging festival attendees to walk/bike to the festival.

With over 50,000 attendees and tons of trash generated, recycling is an essential part of reducing the environmental impact of the Festival.   Thanks to the Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Committee, recycle bins will be posted around the grounds at CarmelFest to recycle bottles and cans.  With the help of our festival goers we hope to recycle about a third of the trash that we have this year.

To encourage festival attendees to leave their cars at home, CarmelFest is partnering with Pedal & Park to offer bike, skateboard, and roller blade parking at the festival.  Additionally, maps for walking to the event will be available on-line and event signs will be posted on the Monon Trail.
Carmel is a leading community in Indiana and green efforts at CarmelFest helps us maintain our leadership position.

Property Bequeathed to the Central Indiana Land Trust for Permanent Protection

June 1, 2010 (Indianapolis, Indiana) – Fifty-three acres of nature in the heart of the Keystone at the Crossing shopping area in Indianapolis will be permanently protected by the Central Indiana Land Trust on June 12th, 2010.  Former landowner Oliver Blair Daugherty ensured the permanent protection of his family’s land by bequeathing it to the Central Indiana Land Trust upon his passing in 2009.  He lived on the land until he became ill in 2008, and fended off many purchase offers over the years.  This 53 acres had been in Mr. Daugherty’s family since the mid-1800s, when his great-grandfather received it as a land grant.  The land has been named Oliver’s Woods Nature Preserve in his honor.

“We are delighted that Oliver Daugherty chose to preserve this beautiful natural area in the midst of such a highly developed part of the city, and we are honored that he chose the Central Indiana Land Trust as the vehicle for doing so.  Mr. Daugherty’s wishes and the mission of the Land Trust are a perfect fit.  The Central Indiana Land Trust will ensure that this land is protected forever,” said Heather Bacher, Executive Director for the Central Indiana Land Trust.

Mr. Daugherty generally kept to himself, but was interviewed by Jeff Kollath of Indy Parks in 2003.  When asked what he would like to see done with the land either during or after his lifetime, Mr. Daugherty said, “I’d like to see what’s here stay here.”

Oliver’s Woods is located along the White River, just steps away from both Keystone at the Crossing and Clearwater shopping areas.  The new preserve is partially forested and partially a prairie restoration, with almost a mile of White River frontage.  In the future, the preserve will be open for the public to use for wildlife viewing and hiking.  A portion of it is in an easement with the City of Indianapolis for the southern portion of Town Run Park mountain bike trails.  The area under easement will continue to serve the community as mountain bike trails.

Oliver’s Woods also features a home, named the Daugherty House, which will eventually become the Land Trust’s headquarters.  The home was built in the late 1800s as a Dutch Colonial and has many historical features, including original hardwood floors and windows.  Additions were built on in the 1950s, including a kitchen and garage.

A public celebration is planned for Saturday, June 12th from 3:00 to 6:00 pm at the Daugherty House at Oliver’s Woods, located at 8825 River Road.  Tours of the property will be available.  Due to very limited on-site parking, attendees are asked to park on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the parking garage at 3925 River Crossing Parkway.  A van will continuously shuttle guests to and from the property throughout the afternoon.  Guests are also asked to RSVP to info@conservingindiana.org or 317-631-5263 by June 7th for this event.
