BURNS HARBOR, Ind. (AP) — Indiana regulators have issued a landfill permit allowing ArcelorMittal to dispose of more than 2 million tons of steel-making waste at the company’s sprawling complex along Lake Michigan.
The state announced its decision in public notices received Tuesday, one year after ArcelorMittal applied for a permit to build and operate a restricted-waste landfill.

Evansville-based Morton Solar & Wind LLC says it has been awarded a more than $2 million contract for what is described as the first net-zero energy elementary school in the United States. The company will install a solar panel system at the school currently under construction in Kentucky. Morton Solar & Wind installed the same system for the first net-zero library in the U.S., located in Chrisney, Indiana.

A massive effort to convert hundreds of state vehicles to alternative fuel sources is now under way. The $22.8 million project includes a $10.1 million federal grant. It’s being overseen by the Indiana Office of Energy Development and the Greater Indiana Clean Cities Coalition.
The effort includes a mix of public and private sector partners. The Indiana Department of Transportation is retrofitting 200 F250s to run on propane and establishing 115 propane fueling stations across the state. They’re also implementing dump trucks that use compressed natural gas.

Cummins Inc. is expanding its High-Horsepower Technical Center and high-horsepower engine product line at its manufacturing plant in Seymour, Ind. The $100 million investment in the plant’s expansion will open the door for Cummins to produce high-horsepower clean diesel and natural gas engines in the future.

Allison Transmission has opened a new hybrid manufacturing plant in Indianapolis, which will be capable of churning out more than 20,000 commercial-duty hybrid propulsion systems a year.
The new Allison hybrid propulsion system captures kinetic energy and later reuses the energy to propel or re accelerate the vehicle. The recovered energy can also be used to power vehicle accessories.
