Chrysler has announced that it will begin fitting an eight-speed transmission to select models for the 2013 model year. The ZF Group-sourced slushbox will be built at Team Pentastar’s Kokomo, Indiana transmission plant thanks to a $300 million investment by the parent company. That cash commitment secures the 1,200 jobs currently working at the plant.

The state is making a push to land more wind energy companies. Officials with the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, Office of Energy Development, along with executives and educators, will attend the world’s largest wind conference next week. Windpower 2010 is being held in Dallas and is expected to attract more than 1,300 exhibitors and 23,000 industry leaders. State officials say they are planning one-on-one meetings with some of the companies in an effort to promote the state’s wind energy sector.

Carbon Motors has completed the conceptual plans for its manufacturing headquarters in Connersville. Initial estimates for operating costs on the 56 year old building have been as high as $14 million a year. The police car manufacturer is hoping modifications to the former Visteon plant will drastically reduce those costs. Officials are also hoping for a LEED Certification for the building.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard will unveil more details today for a $10 million federal grant that will be targeted for a major weatherization and energy efficiency project. The initiative involves a 470 square block area that includes the near east side of Indianapolis. Homes, businesses, schools and churches will be eligible for grants and loans in a project that includes a connection to the city hosting the 2012 Super Bowl. Some of the funding will go toward a similar initiative in the city of Lafayette.

Economic development officials in Tipton County are taking steps to attract a solar panel manufacturing company to the abandoned Getrag Transmission plant. County officials have approved a $330,000 tax break for the owners of the site and a another vote is planned for a $13 million incentive. The Kokomo Tribune reports an undisclosed company is interested in the plant and could bring up to 850 jobs
